International Day of Friendship

International Friendship Day - July 30th

The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly, who dedicated July 30th as the official date.  The day is based on the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

Particular emphasis has been placed on involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity.

Many countries, including the United States, have elected to also celebrate Friendship Day on the 1st Saturday in August.
